Because of William B. Jordan's discerning eye and deep commitment to art, the Meadows Museum of Southern Methodist University contains one of the most comprehensive permanent collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. With the support of philanthropist Algur H. Meadows, Dr. Jordan built a collection that includes masterpieces by Goya, Velasquez, Picasso, Miro, and numerous others. Art historians internationally have acknowledged the quality of his aesthetic judgments, and the Spanish government and royalty have honored his achievements with numerous awards and titles. He earned a doctorate in art history at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York and has published widely in his field. As founding director of the Meadows Museum, he assembled a collection that serves not only as a lasting legacy to artistic talent, but also as a unique teaching tool for students, scholars, connoisseurs, and visitors from the University community and throughout the world. For his contributions to the world of art, and for the enrichment he has brought to the campus and to the city of Dallas, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon William B. Jordan the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
